7 MORE MONTHS! I get so excited about gimmelwald that I want
to smoke a bowl, quit my job, hop on a plane, take that awesome little
train from Interlaken, buy my gondola ticket and just stare at the
most beautiful place on Earth.

What can I say about this place that hasn't been said
already? The Mountain Hostel is so cosy and friendly, and Gimmelwald is just
so breathtakingly beautiful. Without question the best two nights of my
month-long trip to Europe, and I only wish I'd stayed longer. Will
definately be back one day.

This was definitely one of our favorite highlights of our
month long trip across Europe in June. The atmosphere both in the hostel,
and outside made us stay 2 extra days. Thanks for the honeymoon suite.

Hey Petra,

Great place to stay. Met Rick Steves there and actually ended up in one of his books. Am pictured on a split log bench outside the Mountain Hostel one early morning wrapped in one of their wool blankets with the snow-capped summer peaks in the background. Fabulous memory. Wonderful! We will be back again!! I'm going to reserve the "honey moon" suite for my wife and I!!! I hope the PodCast brings you more people, like it brought us to you!

Petra & Walter,
Its been about two years since I was last at the Mountain Hostel, I had planned a two day stay and ended up staying for two weeks. The best two weeks of my life I have to say. Thank you for existing, thank you for your never ending hospitality, and thank you for opening my eyes to the alps. I will NEVER forget the experience. If you ever want to visit the wide open spaces of Texas, not that you need to leave switzerland to get that, but you are always welcome in my home. The website looks great, please keep adding pics to the site.
Best.

Hey Everyone! I was just getting a bit homesick for Switzerland, so I thought I would log on and look at some pictures. Hi Petra, Walter, Nicole, and Michelle, if you see this! Oh, and a question for everyone: in September 2004 some photographers came by the hostel from Traveller (the British magazine). I don't know if they ever published those pix or an article. Anyone know? I'd appreciate hearing, and see you all again this summer!

Oooops my first comment attempt became rather cryptic due to a helpful toddler...so what I was really trying to convey is back in 1988 I was a 21yr old doing the backpacking adventure in the Uk and Europe. I visited many wonderful places with lots of stories to tell...however after all these years my 3 day stay at the hostel in Gimmewald still remains the most spellbinding memory....Cheers!

Folks,
I have you all beat! I stayed longer than planned about the same time as Rick Steves, in the summer of '74. When I got to the hostel I stopped and took in the scenery and realized somebody needs to put this place on the map - big time. This is one of the 5 best hostels in the world, along with the H-G in Estes Park, Colorado, sadly now closed. I am a behind the scenes operative in the AYH Western Reg. and just recommended Gimmelwald to an old friend who, sadly, never hostelled. I haven't forgotten this place and never will.

If you ever have a fantasy of a place totally unaffected by commercialism, pollution, and you dream of a place that is a poster for total Alpine beauty, serenity and peace, make a journey to the village of Gimmelwald. It is a haven that you will never forget.I read about this piece of paradise in swiss travel books & went there with my 15 year old daughter.I took a photo of her with a couple of the local children with their donkeys. It was a totally different atmosphere for her!

Petra and Walter- It has been almost two years since Ashley and I came to the Hostel. Two LONG years. And until this day, when people ask us where the best place is in Europe, we never hesitate. It's Gimmelwald. We miss it so much, that we were looking at the website just to get a glimpse, though our house is plastered with pictures of us hiking and drinking there.
For those of you considering whether or not to go to Gimmelwald, GO!!!! It's not just the best place in Europe. It's the best place in the world. I wish I could teleport myself there now.

We have had the pleasure of being a guest at the Mountain Hostel twice - in October of 1996 and again in May of 1999. After traveling all over the world we say again and again that the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald is among our favorite spots on earth. Besides the beauitiful scenery, incredible hiking, friendly people and cheap prices, Petra and Walter are the nicest, most gracious hosts ever. The amount of work they have done - adding the new showers, the bar, etc.., have made it even more comfortable. Now that we are into adulthood, with 9 to 5 jobs in cubes, 2 kids, and a mortgage, we wonder when we will have the opportunity to make a return visit. Of course, if we die first, and heaven isn't all it's cracked up to be - send me to Gimmelwald - heaven on earth!!!!!

A belated thanks for another great Gimmelwald trip last August! I'm looking forward to coming back again soon--though I will NEVER hike up the back of Schilthorn again (me and steep narrow ledges don't get along too well). Ian is in San Francisco - lock up your daughters.
We just got done talking to Agent West, and it appears that all is well in Canadia. Still, we all wish we were back home in the mountains.
And now, a message from Ian:
What to say....I miss the Abei rides and the sunsets.Hell I miss everything about Gimmelwald. But most of all my family, hope you are all well and hope to see you soon. Wish I could be there for the pshitten, strange to say but you know that's me!

Is there anybody who heard a story about a roman villa close to the limes border in Germany? You left Gimmelwald on June 27. (cablecar 9.30) to Venice. Lets keep in touch! When is your next trip to europe?
(Hi Petra! Take it easy, ok?)

I want to visit your lovely hostel, but I am new to the process. Do I need to bring bedding (sleeping bag) or is it provided? Also, do I need to make reservations (3 of us) for June 19 and 20?

Hi Petra and Walter,
It's me Donny from Boston. Do you remember me? I'm hangin' with my buddy Brian and we were reminiscing about the good times we've had at Gimmelwald and how we rocked the village on National Day last summer. I can't wait to come back again and visit! Thanks again for making my trip one that I'll never forget! How's the training coming for the next triathlon? Hopp, hopp, hopp, hopp.

Not much has changed in the photos since we visited in 2000 for a few days and stayed for weeks. Petra with her welcoming smile and tolerance to a party every night in what most people would regard as their home away from home. Looking forward to the day I step back in, can't be far away!!

Hey, just happened on this site much as I did to the Hostel in Oct '87. Seems to have changed a bit since then in form but not in spirit judging from the other comments... still a magical place! I inherited the management of it for about a week (ala asking people to leave some money in a glass jar on the table) while Frau Schmidt (real name??) visited her sister or aunt somewhere. She got 'bad press' in the stalls, by the way... she seemed okay to me. I was there all alone till Crazy Richard from LA burst in from the snow. The next day, Ruth and Karen from Australia showed up and I and Richard impressed them with culinary prowess. The masterpeice was Hindu Stew (invented at Gimmelwald) made with kielbasa, potatoes, carrots, peppers, beer, and lots of curry. It powered me and Richard up to Schilthorn even after we lost the trail in the snow... Karen and Ruth took the cable car, the Sheilas!! I think I speak for Ruth, Karen, and Richard when I say it was a highlite and a respite to spend a week or so in Gimmelwald. Greetings also to Barb from BC, the girl from Oneida, the Aussie girl who talked of Turkey, and several others. Hasta la Vista!!

Do I have anything to say?! Something draws my back to these Gimmelwald sites again and again: what is it???
Petra, can you find us a job/hotel/lottotreffer, too??
Still nobody from the crazy 70's and 80's in Gimmelwald reading this? Too busy with teenage kids and careers...?
I don't know any of you "young" people, but I sure know every nail of that hostel... except if they changed them, too!!
Sal? to you all, and maybe NEXT YEAR IN GIMMELWALD!
Love und Gr?, Annette
